Please accept my apologies for the lack of blog yesterday, Master Ydir wasn’t feeling very sleepy and needed some extra encouragement to go to bed. Unfortunately my sleep inducing tactics worked too well and I ended up falling asleep as well.
Anyway business as usual today, or perhaps not quite as usual as today for the first time ever I am going to give a YDIR to someone from outside of the UK.
It hasn’t been an intentional slight on the rest of the world, just down to to fact it is where I live so it is what I am familiar with.
Today I want to tell Vania H. Apps that she and the rest of the team behind the Fraser First Booster Group that they are doing it right.
Their plan is to raise $350,000 in order to provide a barrier free playground at Fraser’s McKinley Park and then hopefully go on from there to develop and maintain the existing city parks of Fraser.
Now when I first came across this I was thinking about the park near me, which is surrounded by a barrier (fence) to keep dogs out, so I was a bit confused about the concept, however with a bit more research I found the following definition : A barrier-free playground can be used by everyone, but is uniquely designed to meet the needs of people with disabilities.
Now I have never considered how normal playgrounds unintentionally put it place barriers that exclude children with disabilities. If you have a look around their site (www.fraserfirst.com) you can find out a lot more about these barriers, but the one that really struck me as something important, is that every child can reach the highest play decks. I can only imagine what it must feel like to be a child at a playground, who already know they are different from their friends, and is then left at the bottom whilst everyone else can play at the top.
Fraser First Booster Group, You’re Doing It Right!
Mr Ydir
P.S I had the following reply from an YDIR e-mail I sent last week: ”Thanks ever so much for your message. It probably sounds a bit corny but I still enjoy my job even after 37 years and if I can do anything to help my customers I will!”
